SOCIETY | What prompts Inspector Ravi Verma to nab smuggler Vijay Verma in Deewar (Yash Chopra, 1975)?

While Inspector Ravi Verma is aware of the criminal record of his brother Vijay Verma, he is too obliged by the sacrifice of Vijay for the upbringing of Ravi. However, the above scene brings the twist in the story. The scriptwriter-duo Salim Javed has a well-crafted cause and effect series. While Ravi Verma honestly informs the Police Commissioner about his kinship with Vijay Verma, the Commissioner insists Ravi to take up this rare opportunity. Ravi promises to consider and comes out of the office when he comes across some people who are chasing a young boy. Ravi too chases and shoots to injure the running boy. Ravi is astonished to see the young boy has stolen just a bread.

And now this scene. Ashamed, Ravi, in civil dress, visits the boy's house only to see his retired father, illiterate mother and a hungry sister. Ravi offers them food and reveals his identity.  The mother instantly rejects the food from the inspector who had arrested the boy for a petty crime. She further slams Ravi for not taking action against the dirty criminals. The father, a retired teacher, interferes and endorses Ravi for his corrective action. The father also argues that all the hungry people in the country do not necessarily turn criminals. Ravi realizes his duty above the kinship and decides to arrest Vijay Verma. This is how good values in the Society get reflected effectively in Films.
